DON'T SPIT THE DUMMY

I was thinking (in the bath where I get most of my good ideas) that I dream a lot. Mostly my dreams are fantastical and sometimes I remember them in the morning when I wake. They are invariably loosely connected to things or people I know and places or situations I've been in. As such they come from my brain and memory.

I was also thinking (in the bath this morning) that on occasions we all are put in situations we'd rather not be but because of social etiquette, politeness or undue pressure we endure even though we are uncomfortable. Examples are: Having to sit through a piano, violin or singing recital from an untalented child of friends or family; attending a film, play, stand-up comedy or concert not of your choosing; attending a church service out of a favour or sense of duty; going on a Richard's Bass Bag tour.

It occurred to me that on any of these occasions, drifting into the realms of fantasy like Corporal Jones used to would be a good 'escape'. But, how to do it during waking hours?

Eureka! As someone said in the bath and what I almost said when the idea struck me - an app that captures dreams for later replay. How difficult would that be to produce? Well, I don't know as I'm just the ideas guy and will need someone else to engineer the concept but - I think I'm on to a winner here.

My idea is that the app could be driven via an electronic device like an iPad or a cellphone, connected to the dreamer by earpods while sleeping. This 'dream catcher' (a nice brand name idea there) would upload into a memory cloud for later downloading in those uncomfortable or boring social situations. For a small extra fee my own dreams could be provided to dullards those people who don't dream.

I can see myself and others happily sitting through recitals, conversations, lectures or commentaries with their earbuds in their ears and a smile on their faces making hosts or other attendees believe that they are enjoying the entertainment.

A word of warning though - one would have to refrain from mumbling, singing along to or making sounds of pleasure or alarm related to whatever dream they are experiencing. To counter this a proprietary Dreamcatcher dummy or pacifier will accompany the Dreamcatcher earbuds.

What could possibly go wrong?
